Since returning from last year’s trip I can honestly say I’ve been so busy with outside work I haven’t really had a lot of time for quilt designing. In December I finally managed to complete my Blue Gum Challenge using whatever snippets of time I could manage. I will have to say sewing the hexagons for the final border took almost as long as the rest of the quilt. I am very pleased with the results. Initially I was going to put hexagons right around the outside of the quilt but when I started assembling and laying a few of them out for a ‘viewing’ I didn’t like the result – they were just too ‘heavy’ for the design of the quilt.

Here’s my completed flimsy, I have now basted the layers together ready to quilt but I’m finding a little bit of piecing time a lot easier to achieve than a little bit of quilting time. I’m looking forward to a quieter time in a few weeks.

I saw this beautiful floor this week in a very ordinary country hotel foyer. I think once it must have been quite a grand place.

I’ve been putting the borders onto the ‘flimsy’ for my niece Amy.  It’s not quite so vibrant in real life.

I can now say I dislike putting on borders nearly as much as I dislike hand sewing the bonding down on a quilt. There’s just no creative input in it is there? Still it has to be done, so I bit the bullet and spent the day completing it. Now all I have to do is purchase some backing fabric and decide whether to quilt it or send it out to be quilted commercially.

I’m thinking I’ll do it myself but it is a large quilt, so  the call of cutting and stitching little patches together is very strong and makes me think I’d prefer to get someone else to do it lol!

Still a bit busy but some blank spaces seem to improve the design by giving the eye somewhere to rest.

I’m still liking the variations in this series. I think this one is quite dramatic.

I like the way the stars are framed by the flying geese, it looks like they are set on point.

Played around with the file and I came up with this as a much better design option to my previous quilt layout. I really like this one but I’m not quite sure about the border, it is growing on me though.

Bunty Quilt

I think this is an interesting design with room for some elaborate quilting. I like it.
